Fresh Fruit in Nelson Tasman? Where are the best places?

Summer is definitely the time for fresh fruits in Tasman Nelson region. I’m a real fan of peaches nectaraines apricots pineapple strawberries blueberries…all cut up and combined into a fruit salad.

fresh fruit salad

But …where do you find the best and freshest fruit salads? Over the years I have frequented Lowes orchard in Brightwater, but they have unfortunately have had to close their orchard shop (too much theft). They do however sell at the two Nelson markets, one on wednesday 8-30 to 1-30 and the big and busy guy on Saturday. You can find more details here on whats on Nelson

I also often drop in to The Big Berry on McShanes road – these guys make the best fresh fruit ice cream and usually have a superb selection of fresh berries- also pick your own.

But…I need to develop this resource. For example over the last few weeks we have been buying local botsenberries in a small honesty box fridge on Mapua drive. Absolutley delicious. But what about blueberries? Cherries are a bit over now, at least at Ruby Bay cherries. Apples? Stone fruits?

Mapua Wharf buzzing on a summer’s evening

Lynne and I walked down to the Mapua Wharf the night before  New Years eve last year . The weather was perfect, and the Wharf was buzzing  on this ideal summer’s evening. Here’s a short video clip to celebrate the magic that night.

ps: Thanks to the  TDC management and all the businesses   on the Wharf – you all should be VERY pleased, and proud. Thank you for creating such an amazing ambience for such a great variety of people.

Ruby Bay Cherries – DE-Licious

Reb and I just stopped in at Ruby Bay cherries on Aporo Road, for the most amazing cherries I have had this year, bar none. Get there while they last – how good can their cherries be?

10/10

About 7 minute drive from center of Mapua – well worth the trip. $2kg box cost me $30, and was better than the best cherries i had at the Nelson market (sorry Marlborough – your cherries are good, but……)

Boatshed Cafe in the early summer

Lynne and I went for a walk and a coffee at the Boatshed Cafe in the Leisure Park today (friday , Nov 24) . What a day, and what colours! Sometimes  the “beachy” atmosphere around the Boatshed is simply magical – and today was one of those days. Looking forward to an evening burger and a drink soon – of course they do a lot more than burgers – check their menu out.

The Boatshed in the Leisure Park, the restaurants on the Wharf, Sprig n Fern Java Hut  and  Village Bakery in the Village! What delightful diversity , or as Robin might say to batman “Holy beachside dining Batman” (there are 368 recorded “Holy xyz Batman” exclamations on Wikipedia – this one makes 369)

By the way – excellent coffee today . I had a double shot flat white, hot and strong 🙂
